Experts of the Department control the health and hygiene of imported food and components for animal feed and regular monitoring of internal production. They cooperate with animal feed manufacturers by developing and improving recipes for animal nutrition. A large number of different animal feed analyzes are performed, the results are interpreted and nutritional opinions and advice are given.

Within the Department, the projects of the Ministry of Education and Science are implemented. Associates of the Department are working on amendments and additions to the valid regulations in this area and drafting instructions and other by-laws that contribute to the improvement of the profession.
Laboratory analyzes carried out in the Department of Nutrition and Fodder Testing are:

  • determination of the total number of bacteria in animal feed
  • examination of the presence of Salmonella bacteria in animal feed
  • examination of the presence and number of Clostridium perfringens in animal feed
  • examination of the presence and number of Enterobacteriaceae in animal feed
  • examination of the presence and number of coagulase-positive staphylococci ( Staphylococcus aureus and other species) in animal feed
  • examination of the presence and number of sulphite-reducing clostridia in animal feed
  • examination of the presence and number of mold fungi in animal feed
  • examination of the presence of antibiotics and sulfonamides in animal feed
  • quantitative examination of the presence of zearalenone in animal feed
  • quantitative examination of the presence of ochratoxin in animal feed
  • quantitative examination of the presence of aflatoxin in animal feed
  • quantitative examination of the presence of T-2 toxins in animal feed
  • determination of the presence of ingredients of animal origin in animal feed by the method of classical microscopy
  • determining the presence of bovine DNA in animal feed using the PCR method
  • determination of the presence of beef protein in animal feed using the ELISA method
  • Organoleptic examination of animal feed

Most of the applied methods are accredited according to the SRPS ISO/IEC 17025:2006 standard.
The Department’s experts interpret the results of all the above-mentioned analyses, as well as a large number of chemical analyzes performed in cooperation with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, and provide expert opinions and advice, and also provide a host of other services within nutritional theory and practice.
