Description of basic activities in the department
The Department of Virology deals with diagnostics and differential diagnostics of viral diseases of domestic animals. The Department houses national reference laboratories for classical swine fever, African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue, swine vesicular disease, rabies, enzootic bovine leukosis, horse sickness, small ruminant plague, equine rhinopneumonitis, equine infectious anemia and fish diseases. . In addition to mainly application-oriented research, basic research and development are part of the mission of the Department of Virology. The department has modern equipment, as well as a collection of cell lines, virus isolates and reference viruses.
Activities at the Department:
- Determination of the presence of specific antibodies by various methods, such as ELISA, AGID, HIT, VNT, IFAT, IPMA;
- Determining the presence of viral antigens by FAT and ELISA methods;
- Virus isolation on tissue culture;
- Determining the presence of the virus genome and genotyping, using different molecular methods (PCR, real time PCR, RFLP, sequencing);
- Consultative services of the department – interpretation of test results, testing strategies, sample selection, as well as infection control strategies. These services are available to veterinary practitioners, other testing laboratories as well as researchers in university and other government institutions;
- Organization of training for laboratory diagnostics.
