Description of the main activities of the Department

The Food and Animal Feed Inspection Department controls food and animal feed in order to ensure the protection of human and animal health. In addition to numerous analytical activities, test results are interpreted, product sustainability studies are made and nutritional opinions are given in the field of animal nutrition. An important role in the protection of human and animal health is achieved through monitoring the health and hygiene of food and animal feed from imports, as well as from domestic production, in order to monitor compliance with regulations that ensure food safety. The department cooperates intensively with the food industry, animal feed and state administration institutions.

 

Activities at the Department:

  • Microbiological testing of food and animal feed
  • Immunochemical tests of food and animal feed (determination of the content of mycotoxins in animal feed and food of plant origin – aflatoxin B 1 , zearalenone, ochratoxin, deoxynivalenol, T-2/HT-2 toxin, fumonisins; determination of the content of aflatoxin M1 in milk and dairy products milk; determining the origin of animal proteins in food – beef, pork, poultry and sheep)
  • Molecular testing of food and animal feed (GMO; testing for the presence of DNA originating from ruminants, pigs, poultry; testing for the presence of viruses in food – norovirus, hepatitis A, African swine fever virus)
  • Sensory evaluation of food and feed
  • Presence of antibiotic and sulfonamide residues
  • Parasitological examination (trichinelloscopic examination, presence of Anisakis larvae and parasitological examination of fish)
  • Microscopic examination of animal feed for the presence of ingredients of animal origin
  • Preparation of proposals for declarations
  • Creating a sustainability study
