Description of Basic Activities in the Department

The primary activities of the Department of Virology revolve around the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of viral diseases in domestic animals. Serving as national reference laboratories for various diseases including classical swine fever, African swine fever, foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue, swine vesicular disease, rabies, enzootic bovine leukosis, equine infectious anemia, and fish diseases, the department plays a vital role in disease surveillance and control efforts.
In addition to applied research, the department also conducts fundamental research and development. Equipped with modern facilities and a comprehensive collection of cell lines, viral isolates, and reference viruses, the department is well-equipped to carry out its mission effectively.

Activities in the Department include:

  • Detection of specific antibodies utilizing various methods such as ELISA, AGID, HIT, VNT, IFAT, IPMA.
  • Identification of viral antigens through FAT and ELISA methods.
  • Isolation of viruses in tissue culture.
  • Detection of virus genome presence and genotyping utilizing various molecular methods including PCR, real-time PCR, RFLP, and sequencing.
  • Provision of departmental consultancy services including interpretation of test results, testing strategies, sample selection, and infection control strategies. These services are accessible to practicing veterinarians, other testing laboratories, as well as researchers in university and other governmental institutions.
  • Organization of training sessions for laboratory diagnostics.
